Guide to the European Championships

Added on 9 December 2011, 09:43:12

The European Championships is second only to the World Cup when it comes to major international football tournaments and many would argue that the quality and competitiveness of the Euros surpasses that of the World Cup as 16 of Europe's best footballing nations compete for the Henri Delaunay Trophy.

Played every four years since 1960, the competition's current format of a group stage with the top two teams qualifying for the knock-out stage was introduced in 1984 with eight teams qualifying for the finals and in 1996, that was expanded to 16 teams playing in four groups and the top two in each progressing to the Quarter Finals. That format remains today and as such, ensure that every team plays three games in the group stage which makes for great entertainment for football fans with some fascinating matches in what are always tough groups and that remains the case in the knock-out stages as the stakes get higher the closer teams get to winning the competition.

The European Championships has a rich heritage and this site details the history of the tournament from 1960 to present day, with a list of winners, results, stats and profiles of the famous players and teams that have played in the past European Championships. The site also previews future Euro Championships with information about the teams and players participating along with group draws, tournament fixtures and data on how the 16 competing nations qualified.
